Today, I'm also going to tackle the stubborn faerie painting again. I'm hoping that the little rest has made her more amenable to being painted. I'll be redrawing the face to begin with, perhaps with a different angle.
The holidays were spent around family in quiet celebration. We enjoyed a lovely feast of smoked turkey with all the trimmings and watched A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim playing Scrooge.
How was the week for all of you? I hope everyone had a pleasant week regardless of whether or not you celebrate.
Have an original role playing character, or an original fiction character that you would like to see realized in a drawing?
I am now open until Friday at 9 p.m. CST for discounted commissioned digital bust portraits of your original characters. This is great for other crowdfunders or aspiring authors who want to see their creations brought to life visually.
I offer three different options:
- Black and white--$15
- Comic style--$30
How to put in your request for your Character Portrait
1) Comment on this entry with:
2) There will be a pre-set "Buy Now" PayPal button at the bottom of this entry for payment. Use the dropdown menu to select which portrait option you would like to use.
Please note: I cannot take paid commissions of previously copyrighted material from television, movies, books, etc. Please be sure any request you make is for characters who belong to you!
(A note: As this is New Year's week, I will be open for prompts during the duration of the week, but I might be a little slower to answer the prompts over Wednesday and Thursday. I will absolutely get to every one requested, though.)
The concept is simple: Leave a prompt in the comments, a short description of something you'd like to see me sketch. It could be a one-word prompt, such as "Sorrow" or "Transcendence," or it could be something that requires a bit more description. Use the payment button at the bottom of this entry to pay, and I'll post your sketch both in a reply to you in the comments and in a personal message, where I will link you to the full-sized file.
A few things to bear in mind:
1) To be legally safe, I'm going to ask that you not request any prompts based on copyrighted material. So no fan art requests, please.
2) Please refrain from requesting character designs or portraits at the sketch event, as I have an event specifically for that every week. I can do vague, general impressions of a person you're thinking of, but more specific looks and designs take a lot of preparatory work to achieve.
3) Since I'm running a family-friendly site here, I ask that you refrain from requesting anything with explicit sexual content, violence, gore, etc.
4) Absolutely no requests for anything supporting bigotry, hate, or violence of any sort. I have a zero tolerance policy for this sort of thing.
5) Please keep your prompt ideas relatively simple. If you would like a more complex piece, you can request commission prices.
6) Artwork takes time to complete, and more so when I am working on a lot of prompts, so please be patient! If I get swamped near closing day, it could take me longer than the week to complete everything, in which case I will postpone the next Sketch Day until everything is complete.
7) If I reach 20 prompts before Friday, I will be closing early. This allows me to keep things at a manageable level for the week. You can leave your prompt on the following week if you miss today's event.
8) When you pay, please mention in your payment form what prompt the payment is for and what your name/username is so I can keep track of everything.
9) Payment is due before delivery of the sketch and is non-refundable (unless for some reason I'm unable to complete your sketch, in which case I will refund your money).

And, that's it for now! I'll be taking the weekend off, but I'll be posting updated landing pages for next week's events on Monday morning. I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!
First, I feel inspired. I love creating art, I love running interactive blogs and sites, all of it, but do you know what I love the most? I love the joy it brings people. Your responses, your happiness and teary virtual smiles when you see your characters brought to life, your eagerness to see more is what keeps me working at this. Thank you, all of you, from the bottom of my heart, for your support, your enthusiasm, and your love of art.
In that vein, every year I create a gift for friends and followers, a painting for the winter/Yule/Christmas season. I've been floundering a bit, trying to come up with an idea that resonated, but kept coming up short until this week's Sketch Day. I had a prompt from wyld_dandelyon, who requested a female faerie bringing midwinter blessings, and I sketched this:
It occured to me that this would be the perfect Christmas gift for all of you. So I'm going to be creating a digital painting from it that will be available to the public to download. This won't be a crowdfunded piece, though I'm always open for tips from those who are able and want to support the art. Of course, there are many other ways to support Silverflame Art that are not financial-- helping to spread the word, sharing images with linkback, participation and commenting-- all of these things are immensely helpful and encouraging.
So, today and next week, I'm going to be working on this project, and will be posting progress shots along the way. And I'll be putting together a compilation post of this week's work later today.
Weekly Events (Starting Monday, December 8, 2014)
Mondays 10 a.m. - Friday 9 p.m. --$5 Sketch Events. At ten a.m., I post an entry to open up for sketch prompts. Sketches will be $5 a piece. I close shop at 9 p.m on Friday or when I reach a certain number of prompts (determined by my work load), depending on what comes first. Sketches are posted in comment replies.
Mondays 10 a.m.- Friday 9 p.m.-- Character Art Events. On these days, I open for commissioned portraits of your original characters. This is great for other crowdfunders or aspiring authors who want to see their creations brought to life visually. Prices are $15 for a grayscale drawing, $30 for a simple colorized comic-style drawing, and $50 for a more refined and painterly color piece, and I will post payment buttons for easy access. Artwork is uploaded to my server and links to the high-res files are sent in P.M.s or emails.
Tuesdays-- Participants' Choice Crowdfunded Painting progress updates. When I'm working on a crowdfunded painting based on a Sketch Day sketch that you've voted for, I'll post updates every Tuesday. I'll also post updates sporadically as they're available to show.
Fridays-- Consolidation Posts. This is where I make public posts with all the completed artwork from the Sketch Day and Character Art Day events.
The first Tuesday of each month-- Sketch Voting. I will make a compilation post with the sketches from the previous Sketch Days, and will open polls so that you can decide which sketch I should turn into a crowdfunded digital painting. I will calculate a final funding goal, depending on how detailed the painting will be and how much time I expect to spend on it, and will post a funding ticker on the landing page to keep track of how much has been raised. I will post progress updates of this Participant's Choice painting project every following Tuesday to the project's landing page until it is completed.
The first Thursday of every other month-- Fiction Contest. I will open up for themed short fiction submissions (between 1000 and 10,000 words). For this event, the community will be open to users for moderated posting so you may post your ficlets according to the formatting, theme, and content guidelines. Once all entries are received by the deadline, I will post them to the community and then open the polls for a vote-- you will choose the winners for first, second, and third place. First prize will be a comic-style color illustration by yours truly of the winning fic. Second and third prizes will be a grayscale illustration of each.
Works-in-progress-- I will be posting a steady stream of works-in-progress (not including the Participant's Choice pieces) and sketches from my own imagination that you can choose to support if you enjoy them. Financial contributors will receive perks, such as high-res downloads of the completed artwork, prints, and more, depending on the amount contributed. Pieces that receive financial contribution will be completed, though the ones with greater backing will be prioritized.
Promotions-- I will be frequently creating a post where you can promote your own projects in the comments. I also will make specific promotional posts to spotlight other creators, especially those who practice a crowdfunding model of business.
And then life happened. Needing money, I moved for a non-creative job to a very isolated area with spotty internet connection, so I stopped posting very much. Though the area was fantastically beautiful-- it was near Yosemite National Park, one of the most beautiful places in the country, I feel-- the physically exhausting nature of the job and the remote location made it very difficult to keep working with cyber-based creativity. Then I became quite ill and spent about a month in the hospital, before returning to Texas to recover. Very soon after returning to Texas, I found myself caring full time for a relative with Alzheimer's while dealing with my own continuing health issues. I did my best to keep working with the art, and near the end of last year, I decided to repackage my artistic endeavors under the name SilverFlame Graphics. I built a site that was to be the centralized hub for my crowdfunded projects, which attracted a plethora of spammers but no real traffic, so I took it down again recently.
Things are changing again. The beloved relative suffering from Alzheimer's has recently passed into the next world, and though she will be missed, I am relieved that she no longer bears that burden. I'm still dealing with my own health issues, but I see some hope that they will be taken care of now that some new diagnoses have been made. I've decided it's time to resurrect SilverFlame Graphics. I will probably be re-building a static gallery site soon, but I am going to be using LiveJournal as the central crowdfunding hub, as I feel it is more accessible to users.
I hope to run an exciting and interactive community here, resuming some of my more popular events such as $5 Sketch and Character Art weeklong Events, prize drawings, and voting on which digital painting projects I should next undertake. I am also thinking on adding in some new events, such as a Fic Contest with winners receiving custom illustrations based on their stories. I will also be creating finished digital paintings funded by a crowdfunding pool. I'll be mirroring SilverFlame Art between Dreamwidth and Livejournal, and I've also opened a Wordpress account which may eventually become the centralized hub of SilverFlame Art, depending on the traffic.
Anyway, do stay tuned for more! I will be creating a schedule and event list very soon.
